Last Saturday, 26th May 2012, was a watershed in the UK that will affect most web sites owned by UK companies, organisations and individuals. It marked the end of a period of grace extended by the UK government to sites that did not comply with the new EU cookie directive.
Last week I was busy bringing my own sites into line with the new law (you may have noticed the cookie notice appearing on this site). This week I've been coming up with a solution that can be rolled out to all users of Preachit and Melody. The problem was coming up with a solution that worked flexibly and effectively with the Preachit/Melody platform as well as providing a platform to deal with cookies in other areas of your site. In order to do this. I've gone with the Cookie Consent script from 'Silktide'. It provides a flexible solution with server side and site side filtering options. This should be ready by the end of the week.
For Preachit and Melody users the implementation will be two-fold. First, there will be integration with Cookie Consent built in to the components. You have a switch in the admin area to turn on the behaviour and any code in the mediaplayer or share code bracketed with {ccconsent}{/ccconsent} will be removed if the user declines the cookies. This gives the flexibility of simply removing a part of the script or all of the script depending on the need. The second part is a plugin that will load up and manage the Cookie Consent script for your site. This plugin will only be available for 'Fulcrum Support' subscribers, but if you wish to use a different one, the code in the component will also work with any implementation of the Cookie Consent script so long as the correct behavious are activated.
If you aren't based in a country within the EU this doesn't affect you and none of the relevant changes to Preachit and Melody will affect any of your operations. If you are from within the EU then this is an EU wide directive that is being implemented across the board, so I'd recommend doing something to notify about Cookies. This is not the only compliant solution, but one that, if correctly implemented, should take care of all the legislation.
